For those who don't know, this month is National Caregiving Month. Also I have been caregiving for my 79 year old dad, a auto-immune, kidney transplant survivor.
He is one of the millions of Americans who rely on SNAP benefits aka food stamps. Thanks to the government shut down, food stamp benefits were cut. Luckily I live in a state, where a state of emergency was issued and my dad received a partial payment of his benefits.
Caregivers are going through it, many are enrolling in ACA with higher premiums, government shut down, then government reopened, SNAP issues and add the overall day to day struggles of caregiving. It's rough in these caregiving streets.
On some brighter news, last week I was in Washington, DC for the National Alliance for Caregiving Summit. The organization along with AARP, collaborated on a study which states, they're 63 million Americans who are caregivers. I met one of my U.S. Representatives Sarah McBride. I got to share my caregiving story with her and help advocate for the re-authorization of the Older Adults Act which help funds aging nonprofit agencies and meals on wheels programs.
